Instagram has enabled Likes on Story posts, giving the user another way to express their appreciation for other people's work.
Instead of sending a direct message, Instagram is introducing a new way for users to interact with stories by expressing gratitude with a simple like.
According to an official announcement from Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, the feature is being rolled out to help users clean up their DM inboxes.
To interact with an Instagram story before, you had to either reshape it or leave a comment.
Users' DM inboxes were clogged with notifications as a result of all of these options.
You can now engage with the story by tapping the Like button, just as you would with a regular Feed post that still doesn't send a DM notification to other users.
While the buttons appear to be the same, there are some significant differences between story likes and feed post likes.
How instagram story likes work
On Instagram Stories, a Like button will now appear as a heart icon.
The Like button allows users to express their appreciation for your story. Unless you manually check, you won't know how many people liked your story or who liked it.
Your narrative preferences can be found on the "viewer sheet," which is where you can see who has viewed your story.
Because the goal of rolling out story likes is to reduce notifications, Instagram will not notify you.
One of Instagram's top priorities, as Mosseri stated earlier this year, is to improve the messaging experience. The addition of Story Likes is part of a larger initiative to improve Instagram DMs.
Because story likes are not visible to the public, only you will know how many people have liked a story.
Because story likes are recorded in the viewer sheet, you'll have 24 hours to see how many people are liking a story before the information vanishes.
Mosseri did not specify whether story selection would have an algorithmic effect.
As a result, it's unclear whether stories with a lot of likes would be pushed to the stories carousel.
We also don't know if liking a story increases its chances of being featured in the Explore tab.
Likes on Feed posts have a clear algorithmic impact on the main Feed and Explore tabs.
Check out Mosseri's official statement below for all the known info about Instagram Story Likes:
"Today, we're launching story likes, which will allow you to like any Instagram story you see." So now, when you go into Stories and send a message, there will be a heart icon in the middle of that little paper airplane. And tapping on it will send a like to the story's author, which will appear on the viewer sheet rather than in your DM thread. So you don't mind clogging up your inbox? You don't have to be concerned about anything.
And if they want to see all of their likes, or if you post a story and want to see your likes, you go to the audience sheet for that story and look for a little heart icon from any viewer who likes it.
The goal here is to ensure that people can express more support for one another while also cleaning up the DM. I mentioned at the start of the year that messaging was a top priority for us, and one of the ways we're focusing on it is by focusing DMs on discussions for both you and the people you care about.
So take a look at it. Go through your stories and give one a like if it piques your interest. Send someone some love. Please let me know what you think. Please do let us know if you have any other suggestions for ways to improve the Instagram messaging experience.
